Katerina is a 538 year old vampire trapped in the body of a 17 year old. However not only does that make her look younger, but she is also a doppelganger brought from magic after two Traveller witches made themselves immortal. The female doppelganger looks exactly like Katherine as does another known doppelganger, Elena.

Though Katherine is from Bulgaria and has darker features, Amara who is the original doppelganger is Greek. Katherine, and all doppelgangers, have long dark hair, have a slim body, is tan, and has dark eyes.

What separates Katherine from Elena is her feminine features that she tends to extenuate. She is often seen in tight pants, high heels, curly hair, and she accessorizes more than Elena. She also is much more sassier and holds herself more poised and elegantly. Her looks and figure are very important to her, and she makes a big deal of the way she looks. It's a part of her narcissism. However Katherine has tricked people into thinking she's Elena.
» PERSONALITY:
Katherine is a narcissistic, cruel, and nearly heartless bitch. And there isn't much growth in the 538 years she's been around. Or at least after the first seventeen years. Then everything changed, and Katherine learned from the worst.

Growing up in Bulgaria, Katherine came from a father who was from a Traveller family. Traveller magic is like witchcraft, thought to much like Romani magic. Where witches take from the spirits, Traveller magic comes from events. But her father disowned that side of him and was a harsh man. When Katerina, Katherine's birth name, became pregnant at 17, he took her child from her.

She was introduced to the Mikaelsons not long after, and Klaus who had been bound by doppelgänger blood, already made plans for her. He needed her blood to free him from his hybrid curse. But Katherine caught wind of this, and tricking another vampire, she killed herself to turn her into one. This left her blood powerless. In retaliation, Klaus killed her family and pursued her for 500 years.

And that's how everything changed. Katherine was a charming, attractive young woman who had to put her survival above all else. Klaus massacred her entire family for it. She could never be too comfortable for fear he would be around the corner.

This does not absolve her entirely though. Through the paranoia and 'self first' survival instincts, Katherine has gotten herself into multitudes of trouble and only ever tries to get herself out of it. When she came to Mystic Falls in 1864. She has her way with the town, creating more vampires, having a Bennett which who owes her. And she takes her own death by trading a rare object to a werewolf. When the town begins to realize there are vampires in their town, she not only kills her friend Pearl, but she locks the other vampires in a cave that she escapes from.

Where her former lover Damon thinks she is for all those years. He's agonized over her fate, while she roams the world freely-- completely proud of her endeavors. But then when it comes to the Salvatores, she always is smug. And that's because not only is Katherine ruthless in what she wants, but she always gets it.

She's manipulative in her powers, seducing Stefan and Damon. It's clear Damon is in love with her, but Katherine always wants Stefan. She compels him to fall in love with her, and he has her blood in him when his father shoots him and Damon for trying to rescue her. She's at fault for everything he becomes, but she doesn't care.

Later when she becomes human and meets her daughter, she tells her there are three things she wants: her mortality, her daughter, and Stefan. But Katherine isn't good at putting anyone ahead of herself. Nadia knows this and still sticks around, even as she yet again tricks Stefan into trying to fall for her using Elena's body.

Though the appearance of her daughter does show that Katherine does have a small heart where she's concerned. She tries to push Nadia away at first, knowing how damaging being around her is. Katherine knows she isn't a saint, but she's fighter.

Part of the narcissistic tendencies she has involves her looks. She is deeply jealous of Elena for everything she has, often saying that Elena's life is the life she wanted. That doesn't stop her from often making digs on Elena's looks since Katherine puts so much more energy into her own. However she often impersonates Elena to get what she wants, putting her in a strained relationship with Elena's friends.

Katherine goes from the main antagonist in the earlier seasons to being more of a frenemy until season 5. The first few seasons play on her relationship to the Salvatores. Stefan knows what Katherine did to him. However Stefan can't not see the good in other people, and while Katherine hasn't actively thrown anyone under the bus until she takes over Elena's body. This is why she continues to pursue him. Damon however never gets over what she did to him, and she is kind of okay with that.

That's how she views and treats a lot of people, just toys. There are only a few people who can get past that. And one of those is Elijah-- someone else who tries to make people better than who they are. He is Klaus' brother and was there when Katherine met him. Elijah appeals to the socialite in her as well as the fact that he can be just as brutal, but is mostly seen as the fair Original vampire.

Katherine has affected many of the main characters at some point to get what she wanted. She killed Caroline with Damon's blood in her system (even though they later seem to be at least okay enough for Katherine to help Caroline with her professor), she stabbed Elena's aunt, she chopped off her uncle's fingers, she set up Tyler's older brother to kill someone to trigger his werewolf gene, and the list goes on. At her death, the group sit around and drink to every terrible thing she's done.

All in all Katherine is self serving. What happened to her was terrible, and she did let it change her. She is willing to do whatever it takes so she gets out alive and well. Burning bridges and hurting people has never bothered her. A few people can get through to her, but it really takes her caring about them. Even then it's hard to put herself ahead of anyone-- only ever being selfless when her daughter was dying.

•She stages herself as Elena, eventually making herself known. She tries to go after Stefan, but he hates her. Damon demands an answer, and she tells him it was never about him.
•Kills Caroline with Damon's blood in her as payback.
•While still pursuing Stefan, she tries to get the moonstone back. She fails and admits Elena is in trouble when they try and put her back in the tomb.
•Elena needs information about Klaus coming for her, and Katherine uses Jeremy as bait when Stefan enters the tomb with her. The spell is eventually released to get them out.
•Creates her own contingency plan even though she swears she's on the Salvatore's side. Ends up getting handed over to Klaus where he makes her tell him everything.
•Klaus ends up releasing his werewolf side, she was mostly complicit in helping him given what he would have done if she didn't.
•Wakes up Klaus' father to kill him.
•Stops the plan for Mikael to kill Klaus because she didn't want Damon killed as well as Stefan regaining his humanity
•Kidnaps Klaus' family in caskets and then flees
•Shows back up when the group is looking for the cure. Eventually they get it for Elena, but during a fight, Elena uses it on her.
